Sciatica – How to Get Rid of the Pain
If you have a burning sensation along the length of your spine, this can often mean that you may be suffering from Sciatica. The ailment name Sciatica, is derived from the compression or irritation of the ‘sciatic nerve’. This is largest nerve in our body and runs down the spinal cord, throughout the buttocks and down the back of each leg.
Sciatica suffers have usually had back problems in the past, such as a prolapsed or slipped disc. However it is not unknown for people with no previous back related problems at all to suffer from Sciatica.
A ‘slipped disc’ in fact is the result of the softer internal material coming through and aggravating the Sciatic nerve roots along the spinal cord. It is not uncommon for some pregnant women to suffer from Sciatica, during pregnancy or even during child-birth. Incorrect lifting of heavy objects or stress, can also trigger Sciatica.
Sciatic pains can vary from being mild to very painful, even possibly immobilizing the sufferer. All suffers complain of having shooting pains along the spine, and in the buttocks and the legs. A tingling sensation or even numbness in the and legs, along with a general feeling of weakness are all symptoms experienced by some.
Fortunately for some people, Sciatica can be a temporary condition, and it does ease off with time. Obviously during pregnancy, the effects of Sciatica should disappear after childbirth.
Tip 1 – Temporary relief can be gained by laying on your back, on the floor for short periods of time. Whilst on the floor keep your knees bent, and both feet flat on the floor. Support your head with a good pillow or some books.
Tip 2 – If you can, arrange a session with an Aromatherapist. An appropriate massage using the correct oils will help relieve the ache.
Tip 3 – A warm bath with lavender oil can also be helpful in relaxing the muscles that are causing the pain.
Obviously to avoid Sciatica pains, we should endeavour to keep our bones and nerves healthy. Try eating more foods which are primarily rich in Calcium (fresh or tinned fish, eat the bones as well). Magnesium is also a valuable source (nuts and soya beans). Ensure that you get your daily dose of Vitamin D as this helps the body absorb the calcium. Alternatively, you could try supplementing your diet with brewers yeast.
Obviously, if your Sciatica condition worsens dramatically, or doesn’t ease over time, then you should go to your GP or physician for treatment.
