What are Sinuses?
Sinuses are small air pockets that extend from within the nose, to the bones of the skull. They are a component of the nasal air and membrane system that secretes mucus. Sinuses are linked to the nose through small openings. In a normal day, all foreign matter entering the nose is swept into the mucus, where it flows down the throat, until it is broken down by the acids in the stomach.
However, when nasal passages become affected by allergies, pollution or infection, the sinuses can begin to produce extra mucus. A swelling of the nasal membranes and other blockages, leads to irregular pressure in the sinuses and the collection of mucus. This can result in sino facial pain. The area affected by sino facial pain depends on which sinus is affected. Some regions affected by sino facial pain are:
• Forehead or face.
• Between the eyes, or behind them.
• Upper cheeks and teeth.
Some of the main causes of sino facial pain are chronic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, inflammatory nasal polyps and nasal neoplasm. Infectious conditions such as acute bacterial sinusitis can also cause severe pain in the face and forehead.
